Leading WithinIN Series - Book Tour

CONNECT. LEARN. GROW. CREATE. - A PROFESSIONAL-TO-YOUTH  EMPOWERMENT MOVEMENT

Continue from "Home Page" (Top Left): While driving down Georgetown, in Washington, DC, it hit her (Sharon Parker), “why not host an Unconditional Love retreat to bring women together”.  Never in a million years did she imagine it would turn into a social movement that would bring #TrueSynergy to the next generation leading youth, adults and elders.  Yes, it is I, Sharon Parker, President for Remembering Our Ancestors Synergistic Association (ROASA), Inc., and extremely excited to share the we will host our 5th Annual Unconditional Love Retreat in Washington, DC coming June of 2017.

Back in 2013, at the historic L’Enfant Plaza Hotel in Washington, DC (SW), we held our first ROASA, Inc., #UnconditionalLove retreat.  Our theme was “Reflecting on Life Experiences to Develop a Successful Future” (see attached flyer with our themes from 2014-2016).  We were blessed with a number of trailblazers who shared their story of triumph after experiencing barriers and setbacks in their family and career.  We rejoiced with trailblazers like Dr. Barbara Reynolds, Dr. E. Faye Williams, Pastor Mary Wilson, Dr. E. A. Beth, Sears, PH.D., Juanita Busy Bee Britton, and Renee Robinson and a host of others on how they overcame those setbacks to become true icons in our community #Today.

Here is a testimony from Dr. E. A. Beth Sears, P.H.D:  "I was honored and awed by the opportunity to interact with such accomplished women at the first annual ROASA, Inc., retreat. In addition to the company of such accomplished people, I was especially moved by their stories of their journeys. Success takes hard work, and these individuals had many barriers which would have thwarted the journey of many, but chose to persevere, and use their stories as inspiration to others.

From journalists, consultants, ministers and poets, their gifts were undeniable. There were many firsts in the group and I take pride in being the first Caucasian speaker at the event. I teach on first impressions as it is an element of my expertise communication and those impressions are often formed before anyone has a chance to speak. Our first impressions are formed by our life experiences and may have nothing to do with the individual in front of us. What a loss if we do not look beyond to understand the depth of the individual regardless of the package in which they come. By listening to one another and acknowledging a person’s brilliance and gifts, we can move a long way toward breaking down barriers that keep us apart. Many thanks for the gift of the first annual ROASA conference as my life was enriched by it. Beth"

Continue from "Home Page" (Middle of Page): Dr. Barabara Reynolds writes:  “Finally the Coretta Scott King Story:  My Life, My Love, My Legacy is shared with a world audience. Coretta Scott King―wife of Martin Luther King Jr., founder of the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change (The King Center), and twentieth-century American civil and human rights hero toward the end of her life commissioned Rev. Dr. Barbara Reynolds to write her memoir.  It will be released on January 17th 2017.

Dr. Reynolds, a journalist and author of six books, first came into contact with Coretta King in 1975 when she was assigned to write a magazine article for the Chicago Tribune. From that encounter a thirty-year life-changing relationship of mentorship and friendship evolved, resulting in King turning to Reynolds, an ordained minister to write about her most note-worthy accomplishments but also her deepest pain and setbacks…”.

Yes, we here at Remembering Our Ancestors Synergistic Association, Inc. (ROASA, Inc.), is honored to share that our very own #UnconditionalLoveSister, Dr. Barbara Reynolds will serve as our keynote speaker at ROASA’s 5th Annual Unconditional Love Retreat, which will be held in June 2017 (Save-The-Date:  16th and 17th).

Dr. Barbara Reynolds is n ordained minister, a columnist, and the author of five books, including the “Out of Hell & Living Well:  Healing from the Inside Out”.  She was a longtime editorial board member of USA Today, won a SCLC Drum Major for Justice Award in 1987, and was inducted into the Board of Preachers at the 29th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. International College of Ministers and Laity at Morehouse College in 2014.

Dr. Reynolds continues”…From the pages of this compelling book, Coretta King emerges from the shadows, the margins of history and more importantly from behind the labels of wife of, mother of, leader of—which while correct never went deep enough to reveal the fullness of her life.

In her memoir, you will see both character and courage, of a woman who was not only married to Dr. King, but was married to the movement of which she was a partner.  She was born in April 27, 1927 into the troubled and twisted times in Alabama, where her house was burned down as a teen-ager; she was in her home with her two-year-old baby when her home was fire-bombed during the 1955 Montgomery  Bus Boycott. Although she never knew if the same hate that killed the love of her life would also claim her life and those of her children, she refused to step aside even as threats continued long  after the assassination of her husband.

In her own voice, you will see a Coretta, moving on through many lonely days as the architect of her husband’s legacy working tirelessly to found and develop The King Center as a quasi-international West Point of Non-violence, lobbying for fifteen years for the US national holiday in honor of her husband and campaigning for the rights of the disadvantaged around the globe and at home.

In this memoir, for the first time Coretta King talks candidly about her marriage and the rumored reports of Dr. King’s infidelity; she offers her thoughts on the reasons behind SCLC co-founder Ralph Abernathy’s unfavorable characterization of Martin in his autobiography, as well as some unproductive characteristic within the inner circle of the civil rights movement.

Legendary leaders, such as Maya Angelou, former U.N. ambassador and U.S. congressmen Andrew Young;  Myrlie Evers-William, a past chairman of the NAACP , whose civil rights active husband Medgar Evers was assassinated; Rep. John Conyers,  who played a major role in legislating the King Holiday bill as well as Dr. Bernice King, also provide reflections in this historic work.

Dr. Reynolds views Coretta King as one of the world’s most trusted moral leaders, and effective disciple of non-violent direct action, who left a model of self-less, compassionate leadership that is sorely needed today.”
